How to make your house feel like a home with Louise Roe

Louise Roe, fashion journalist and founder of interiors brand Sharland England, brought her timeless designs to Kin House for a photoshoot featuring new pieces in the collection. From hand-painted ceramics to rattan furniture, Sharland England celebrates nostalgic, handcrafted pieces designed to last. While at Kin House, Louise shared her styling secrets; from the finishing touches that make a house feel like home, to creating a serene and calming bathroom.

What drew you to Kin House as the setting to shoot your Sharland England products?

“I love the bones of a beautiful old country house; Kin House has so many elegant original features and a real charm to it! Mix that with Lucy’s clever interior design, and it was the perfect backdrop to bring our rattan and tabletop pieces to life.”

Do you have a favourite space in Kin House? How did you feel this complemented your products?

“The yellow dining room is stunning, with its original windows letting in all that glorious natural light, an enormous fireplace and such a heavenly yellow paint – I need to find out the name!”

What are your go-to finishing touches that make a house feel like home?

“Low, amber light bulbs in lamps, candles for just the right scent, always a cocktail cart – always! – and personal touches such as books, old family photos, family antiques. It’s about layering memories into the room.”

We love the new bathroom accessories you’ve introduced to the range. Do you have any styling tricks for making a bathroom feel calm and serene?

“I designed our towel rail and clothes horse for just that reason. I was struggling to find anything but stark metals for those bathroom accessories, so we made our own, inspired by antiques. I think bathrooms should look and feel just like the rest of the house – warm paint colours or wallpaper, artwork, a stool or a little chair by the bath, and perhaps a shelf for pretty bottles and shells.”

Where do you most feel at home? How does this influence your designs and product range?

“In our house, I work from an antique bureau desk in the living room, and in the winter I’ll light the fire, which makes it a very cosy office. Outside of home, I love visiting National Trust properties for architectural details and decor ideas. Some of them have barely been touched since they were private homes, so you can almost walk back in time and feel how people used to live.”
